How does Residents 3000 work?

Residents 3000 is an Incorporated Association. This means that we are registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria within the State Department of Justice. Incorporation means that we conform to formal requirements as to our financial affairs and hold an AGM – a normal safeguard in establishing voluntary bodies such as Residents 3000.

Our purposes are:

  • to encourage the growth of a balanced residential community in the postcode 3000 area;
  • to encourage the development of facilities and activities which will assist the existing and potential population of the City;
  • to work with existing organisations and the various levels of government to enhance the City’s potential for living.

We try to represent residents who have problems and we undertake consultations with the city about all the functions which affect us – from the Annual Budget to planning policies, keeping our parks, gardens, streets and footpaths in good shape, controlling anti-social behaviour and many other issues.

We are members of the Police and Community Consultative Committee (PCCC).The underlying theme of these meetings addresses “community safety”. And we frequently make submissions to Council Committees both in writing and by addressing them in session. We find that the Council and its officers welcome our input.

How do we do it?

  1. Through having an active membership – of residents who know their area and the people in it. And one of the benefits of City life, is that you really do get to know people around you – traders, workers, residents, dog-walkers – everyone.
  2. By working closely with the various authorities, primarily the Melbourne City Council, we can talk to decision-makers. Of course we don’t always agree, but good communication is essential if we are to be involved.
  3. We try to communicate well – this website is one way. We used to  publish a Newsletter in hardcopy called “Our Neighbourhood” – (click here for the last and final edition) about 4 times a year. However we decided to move to our current format for wider and more interactive communication and also in keeping with cost-efficient and sustainable practices.  To give some ongoing sequence, we decided to retain the newsletter masthead for our website. We  continue to print Flyers advertising our events, and these are distributed in the old fashioned way!
  4. We hold meetings about four times a year with good speakers, which helps people to meet and socialise and have questions answered.

So, we keep busy!
