Tree Art – Melbourne & Spain

The City Square is back to being just that ,after a short stint at being “Christmas Square”. Some new art in the form of colourful knitted (or is it crocheted?) jackets adorn the gum trees… the Spanish forest at Oma has painted trees by an artist too…at least our  knitted “jackets” can come off if the weather gets hot or the mood for something new takes over! See both below:

Have YOU joined the “Green” conversation?

Urban Forests, Rooftop Gardens and Vertical Gardens…not just a topic of conversation, but about significant planning for our future, incorporating as much “green” as we can in our city .. please read the following article by Megan Backhouse…New shade of green for the city  and City of Melbourne’s “Urban Forest Strategy” still in draft form awaiting YOUR views – do write in to CoM , Residents 3000 or Corba in our USEFUL LINKS in the left hand column.

Have you any pictures? Send yours…

We are always interested in art displays around the city. If you know of any works or have any pics you could send us, please do. Here is a corner art board depicting a 3-dimensional sculpture. Eye-catching!

Review of Victoria’s Transport Plan – Let’s hope they keep the “S” word up front.

The new Baillieu government will evaluate all transport projects in Labor’s Victorian Transport Plan of 2008, welcome news to those lobby groups who have fought hard for a SUSTAINABLE plan for the future that will represent a new era in improved public transport and more railway links both for freight and public use. Residents 3000  totally supports improvements to the public system and have high hopes of a rail link between the City and airport in the near future. As for that “S” word  …sustainable, sustainable sustainable.. can’t say it too often can we? Let’s hope they hear us! Victorian Transport Plan | Baillieu Shelves Blueprint

WHAT’S GOING ON HERE?

This is simply UNACCEPTABLE to CBD residents , and surely to all passers by. This junk was placed here on Friday afternoon (14/01/2011) and is still there Sunday morning, 2 days later. Council always seems defensive when complaints are made about rubbish but we believe that enforcement officers randomly driving through the City’s streets and dealing with offenders such as this is the only way. Sorry, City of Melbourne there is too much rubbish around and we don’t like it!! See for yourselves at cnr. Swanston/Little Lonsdale

A Not-To-Be-Missed EVENT! February 23rd

It is not often we have The Police to ourselves, so this is an opportunity to be seized! Inspector Bernie Jackson will join us at our next social event as Guest Speaker and tell us about policing in our Precincts and answer any questions you have been saving! Please join us for a complimentary drink and nibbles, meet your neighbours and friends, not just residents, but businesses and visitors. We are sure you would agree that the better we all get to know each other and work together the better the outcomes we share… here is your INVITATION

BUILDING BRIDGES… Police & Community

Thank you ,Inspector Bernie Jackson for your  interesting talk and taking the stream of questions from the floor which could have gone on for hours!  Precinct Policing was the main topic, with 38 precincts having been established. There is more work to be done in familiarising people with this new model which was very well received by attendees. Outcomes were… the importance of information sharing, shared responsibility by community and law enforcers, and the fact that safety, security and amenity of our community is not just the job of police. We look forward to bringing our readers more information as it comes… meanwhile to go the police website….www.vicpolicenews.com.au

Committee for Melbourne’s recipe for boosting the economy….

Where have all the choices gone?

If the elderly are : too lonely – what about house-sharing? have too large a house? a couple of boarders could add to company and cash, and family? what’s wrong with the “granny flat”? or with family inheriting and moving in themselves? ..and of course for those who want to downsize or move elsewhere – they have that choice too!  Empty Nesters | Retirement Homes or Lobby group calls for older couples to give up family homes | Herald Sun

A Fantastic MOOMBA Day in Melbourne!

The Labour Day public holiday  attracted huge crowds to Melbourne for its many events and the Moomba parade. Even the weather was sublime….

.. and the King and Queen were in their element. Then…time for coffee and a snack and perhaps some browsing and shopping.Hope everyone made the most of it!

The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show

Residents 3000 continues to lobby for a change of venue for this Show. We have nothing against the MIFGS as an event, just the misuse of this World Heritage site each year.We find it hard to believe that there is no detriment to Carlton Gardens, and moreover, the people of Victoria find themselves deprived of this place of recreational enjoyment for as long as MIFGS takes to set up, host the show, and dismantle the stalls…unless of course they want to pay the entry fee!

We also note that cyclists are ignoring the “No Cycling” signs and thoroughly enjoying the changed conditions while the show is setting up…meandering through on their push bikes or just whizzing…

Are we being unreasonable? Here is our letter to the Minister….MIFGS letter to MinisterRyan Smith-1

EARTH HOUR 8.30pm Saturday 26th March 2011

Will you be joining people throughout Australia and around the world to switch off YOUR lights to show support for climate change and sustainability?

Great news from our neighbours in Fitzroy!

Fitzroy Residents’ Association is planning a campaign to restore the public walk in the top of the Royal Exhibition Building. There are many photos taken at different angles and the view is fantastic! Here are some.. we are especially showing the south Carlton Gardens’ view which is currently occupied by the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show and which is not available to the public at this time of year unless they buy a ticket! Let’s hope we can support the re-instatement of the “walk”! For this year, just enjoy the pics…

Do You Know That……we have at our doorstep the most important building in Australia?

Of course you guessed right … it is the Royal Exhibition Building where the grand opening of the first Australian Parliament took place in 1901. It is indeed where the Commonwealth of Australia’s first Parliament was sworn in on 9th May, 1901.

The entire site of the Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens encompasses the values of the place …deservedly World Heritage, and entrusted to our governments as its custodians. The Museum administers and manages the Royal Exhibition Building (REB) and the City of Melbourne, the Carlton Gardens.

Which is why we are so unhappy about the use of these gardens by the Melbourne International  Flower & Garden Show, when they could easily make use of another site. The Showgrounds has been suggested, and increasingly the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre (MCEC) -South Wharf /”Jeff’s Shed”.

And …are we Melburnians getting “value for money” with this event? Over to you, our readers, what do you think?

“WHAT’S THE HURRY?” Lord Mayor & Councillors?

Suddenly and very speedily the re-licensing matter for the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show (MIFGS) is to be on the Council’s Meeting Agenda next Tuesday 12th April 2011, less than a week after the show was dismantled! Why the extraordinary haste?

RESIDENTS WANT:

1/ Cost analysis of this commercial, for-profit show and how much the ratepayers chip in.   2/Transparency of the re-licensing process  3/Worthy custodianship of this World Heritage Site of Carlton Gardens

Here are the docs. for next Tuesday. Please attend if you can.. you have rights,  just as City of Melbourne has responsibilities….

Agenda External and    MIFGS 5.7pdf

Thank you Councillors for deferring Item 5.7

We are very pleased that Council unanimously deferred the matter of renewing the MIFGS licence for continued use of Carlton Gardens by the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. Readers may be interested in the Agenda Item and Residents 3000′s submission….we felt it unfortunate that the Lord Mayor suggested that we were “demonising” MIFGS when we were in the situation where we had no right of reply.  On the contrary, Lord Mayor, we have never and will never demonise.. we have no quarrel with MIFGS (other than requesting a re-location of this event), unless of course you want to make it look this way. The questions we ask are of Council, and we hope that we have transparency of  process surrounding the re-licensing of this event!!

Here are the docs….5.7 (Agenda Item)  and Residents3000 Letterhead-6 (R3000 submission)

U3A and Wellbeing? How do these connect? Let’s find out…

Firstly, U3A stands for University of the Third Age- sorry for those who thought it had something to do with a Space Launch! Or maybe it is, being symbolic in many ways. And we’re not sure it’s just for seniors – after all “Wellbeing” is part of our lives, and what we want for our CBD resident population. So go find out as the Flyer suggests and meet others. We’d love feedback, so don’t hesitate to let us know…       Aprilforumreminder

HOW ON EARTH DID WE MISS AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE WEEK?

And how on earth did we manage to give our Melbourne World Heritage Carlton Gardens the “miss”? We don’t think there was enough publicity for the Gardens during Australian Heritage Week.. 14th – 20th April 2011… just one activity on the very last day at the eleventh hour? A talk on the importance of  REB and Carlton Gardens (thanks to Museum Victoria) with a garden walk, weather permitting.  And not a line in our City’s April’s MELBOURNE NEWS, under FESTIVALS !! ( but a big “plug” for the the “most successful horticultural event in the Southern Hemisphere, the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show.. set to amaze..” says CoM on page 14 ). CoM has certainly gone missing on our National Heritage Week…or have they “lost the plot” (pun intended)! Let us Melburnians make it something EXTRA SPECIAL next year!

MANY HAPPY RETURNS OF THE DAY to Australia’s Federal Parliament!

Today, the 9th May 110 years ago, Australia’s Commonwealth flag was hoisted for the very first time. And we residents of the CBD recognise the building where this great celebration took place – right at our doorstep in the ROYAL EXHIBITION BUILDING at CARLTON GARDENS!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a very special site and a very special place in our history!! Hip hip hooray!

YOUR INVITATION to a RESIDENTS 3000 event..

Welcome to all who live, work or “hang out” in the city and have an interest in matters concerning WASTE. It might seem a funny topic, but interesting things have been happening in the area of sustainable practices of dealing with whole community waste, and also those smaller matters, like our rubbish collections, and what we do, if we have stuff to dispose of that we can’t just place in the street for regular collection. We have as guest speakers, two Officers from the Engineering Division of City of Melbourne to explain, inform and help us with our problems. This is a rare opportunity, so do come along and join us. And you can also meet other people around town and have a glass of wine and a chat. Do have a look at the flyer.. ..here is your invitation below.. click onto the blue letters…

Recent RESIDENTS 3000 event…

About 50 of us met at the Multi-Cultural Hub on 18th May. Apart from food, wine and gossip, we were fortunate to have City of Melbourne’s team Gordon Harrison, Jacob Malone and Rebecca Hughes from Engineering give us a presentation on the new Waste Compliance By-Laws and how they have started implementing them. Councillors Ong and Louey also participated impromptu, giving us preliminary insight into some innovative technologies that will be trialled in parts of the City as the new Integrated Waste Management Programme. Very exciting!

ADAM BANDT is our local MP and OUR VOICE in Canberra!

In case some of us have forgotten, we Melburnians made history by electing a Greens candidate – Adam Bandt, for the seat of Melbourne in the last Federal Election. And you may have received his newsletter telling us about the issues he is putting forward on our behalf.  Planning is a big one, and so is Heritage.Particularly the prospect of raising funding for better recognition of the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens……which Residents 3000 has been campaigning for…

There’s so much more on the website, so log on and have a read… you may have an issue you feel strongly about …or just find out how he is doing.

TRASH or TREASURE? Let Heritage Victoria know…

The way it was….. for example,do you think the present Boom Gate is an improvement on this? Have a look next time you are in Nicholson Street!

THE ROYAL EXHIBITION BUILDING (REB) & CARLTON GARDENS (CG). We now have before us in draft form, a World Heritage Management Plan. Although none of us at Residents 3000 knew about this, a friend living in Fitzroy found a flyer in their letterbox and word got around..thank goodness for friends! Otherwise Heritage Victoria would have been all the less blessed in not having any “pearls” from us! But we shall give them a few pearls whether they anticipated our input or not! And no doubt others will too. So please tell them if you want this to be treasure, preserved for future generations, and/or the Gardens for the passive recreation of citizens every day of the year.

Now, if you feel like writing a sentence or two, we have put together a few dot points you may want to use as a guide…whmp-some-submission-tips3-1 or, if you are feeling curious, the complete docs are available at http://www.dpcd.vic.gov.au/heritage/heritage-places-and-objects/world-heritage/world-heritage-master-plan

Hello All residents – City of Melbourne is offering to take all our non-recyclable junk  if we can leave it at the following drop-off points..

E-waste day   and   Hard and green waste. A good opportunity to tidy up for Spring!

Is this a good look for Melbourne’s CBD?

Washing and other bulky items items of storage are appearing in ever increasing quantity on balconies of high rise buildings. Do we need to consider this impact on the appearance of our city now that there is higher and higher high-rise. There are 2 views: one, that people should be able to place whatever they want on their balconies which are their property, and another that says this is unattractive, and developers should be encouraged to look at providing some solutions.Unsecured items can be dangerous in wind gusts. The other question is about the coil air-conditioning condensers that appear on every balcony. Both noisy and unsustainable.

Your views would be appreciated…

Some feedback about OUR LAST EVENT with Responsible Alcohol Victoria

Hello Readers – Just to let you know it was held on the 28th September (remember the night it “bucketed” and thundered ?) Thank you to the just over 30 people who attended despite nature’s fury. Judy & Peter Yeung set up an olive oil tasting booth and we were able to taste, buy and find out about this entrepreneurial retired couple whose produce is from their family farm in Mickelham. All amidst much neighbourly chatter and laughter.

RAV speakers Sarah Kaushik and Anna Lygopolous gave an entertaining presentation of a very serious subject – ALCOHOL- and how we residents might be both informed of, and respond to, late night alcohol related activities that detract from our amenity and peace of mind. We shall not summarise it all, but give you some key contacts which you might want to revert to before total frustration.

Objecting to a Liquor Licence application: Liquor Licences Online at www.justice.vic.gov.au/alcohol

The Role of the Compliance Directorate : If you have a complaint about noise levels or patron behaviour, you might want to contact the venue manager, but failing all,the  email hotline for complaints is compliancedirectorate@justice.vic.gov.au  You should include details about the nature of your complaint, the exact location, and your own contact details.A Complaint Form is also available at www.justice.vic.gov.au/alcohol  Alternatively write to:  Compliance Directorate, Responsible Alcohol Victoria, PO Box 120, PRAHRAN, VICTORIA 3181

The “Freeze” will apply until June 2013, impacting on new licences for trade after 1am.

We were very pleased to have Councillor Oke and Councillor Ong attend, and thank them for their time and input. There was some discussion that public transport (other than taxis & Nightrider buses) ceases, at the very time that many patrons exit venues at 1am. It would be helpful if Council could lobby State Government to extend the trains (outgoing) until 2am on Saturdays and Sundays, getting people moving  more quickly to their destination . Patron behaviour outside Fast Food Outlets was also a “sticking point” with residents. No doubt these issues will be ongoing.

Please do get back to us with any comments or questions in the section below, and we shall get back to you…
